04 / MOUNTAIN RADIO

FIELD
GUIDE.

Practical lessons for getting more out of a LoRa radio when the landscape is doing everything it can to block your signal.

LINE OF SIGHT

Elevation wins.

Higher is often better. Trees, ridges, buildings, and folds in the terrain can all change the path between two nodes.

ANTENNAS

Small details matter.

Use the correct antenna for your device and frequency. Keep connectors sound, antennas vertical when appropriate, and avoid hiding the radio against your body.

POWER

Battery is infrastructure.

Cold, transmit activity, screen time, GPS, and weak-signal conditions can all change runtime. Know your battery before you depend on it.

FIELD TEST

Measure, don't guess.

Log your location, elevation, node names, distance, terrain, antenna, and whether the contact was direct or routed. Repeat tests when conditions change.
