Start with a complete plan.

Three parts checklists connect hardware, cases, firmware, configuration and testing. These are planning packages, not field-verified product bundles.

Documentation checked October 10, 2026. Buy the appropriate regional radio, attach its antenna before transmitting, and verify the exact revision and accessories. No tested firmware version or measured runtime is claimed for these packages.

Beginner handheld · T-Echo 915 MHz

Parts checklist

  • LILYGO T-Echo in the 915 MHz regional version; T-Echo Plus is a different firmware target.
  • Included case and battery; check the seller’s exact package.
  • 915 MHz antenna and supplied adapter appropriate to the device; the board connection is U.FL.
  • USB data cable compatible with the supplied device, a phone with the official Meshtastic app, and a second operator or node for testing.

Install and pair

nRF52840: follow the device’s bootloader instructions and copy the correct T-Echo UF2 firmware. Do not use a firmware file for T-Echo Plus.

Match region, modem preset and channels with your intended contact. Start with a short arranged test, record successes and failures, and increase distance one variable at a time.

Home learning node · Heltec LoRa 32 V3/V3.1

Parts checklist

  • Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V3 or V3.1 with the 863–928 MHz radio variant for US operation; verify the exact revision.
  • 915 MHz antenna matched to the board’s IPEX/U.FL connection; account for any external pigtail.
  • Compatible USB data cable and regulated USB power supply. Start indoors at a window rather than treating a printed case as weatherproof.
  • An enclosure designed for the exact board revision and antenna routing. A separate backup battery is optional and needs a compatible power design.

Install and pair

ESP32-S3: use the official web flasher and the correct Heltec V3 target. Follow current USB-driver and boot-mode instructions.

Mountain solar planning package · RAK4631 + RAK19007

Parts checklist

  • RAK4631 core in the US-compatible frequency variant plus a RAK19007 base board, or an explicitly equivalent kit.
  • 915 MHz antenna and compatible IPEX/U.FL connection; strain relief and short feedline.
  • Battery, protected charging system, and solar panel matched to the base-board input limits and battery chemistry. Check manufacturer wiring and polarity before connecting.
  • Outdoor enclosure, cable glands, mounting hardware, condensation control, and cold-charge protection suited to the site.
  • A measured full-node load and local winter sunlight estimate before choosing battery capacity and panel size.

Install and pair

nRF52840: use the RAK4631 UF2 firmware and follow RAK’s assembly and bootloader instructions. The solar power system must be sized and bench-tested separately.

Your first contact

Email contact@backcountrysignal.org to arrange a local test. A map marker does not guarantee a reachable node. Use Field Mode to document the test, and prepare offline files before leaving connectivity.
