Bought the RAKwireless WisMesh Station or WisMesh Station HP and have no idea what to do next? This guide assumes you know nothing about Raspberry Pi, SSH, Linux, meshtasticd, MQTT, or network addresses.
WisMesh Station: standard-power 22 dBm radio.
WisMesh Station HP: high-power 30 dBm / 1 watt radio.
Both use the same Raspberry Pi-based platform and setup flow. The major difference is LoRa output power.
The station includes separate LoRa and GPS antenna connections. Make sure the correct antennas are attached to the correct ports before normal radio use. Do not mix up LoRa and GPS connectors.
The WisMesh Station is basically a Raspberry Pi 4, a RAK6421 WisBlock Pi HAT, and a Meshtastic LoRa radio packaged into a metal enclosure. RAK ships it with meshtasticd already installed, so unlike a DIY Pi build you normally do not need to install Linux or Meshtastic from scratch.
ETHERNET IS THE SIMPLEST.
If you can plug the station into your router or network switch with Ethernet, do that. RAK recommends Ethernet for permanent installs.
- Connect the LoRa and GPS antennas.
- Plug an Ethernet cable from the station into your router or switch.
- Connect the supplied power adapter.
- The station asks your router for an IP address automatically using DHCP.
- Open your router's connected-device list and look for the new Raspberry Pi / RAK device.
It's simply the station's address on your home network — something like 192.168.1.123. You will use that address in your browser.
USE THE BUILT-IN SETUP WI-FI.
If the station has no Ethernet connection and has not already joined Wi-Fi, it creates a temporary setup hotspot.
RAK_XXXXrakwirelessThe XXXX part is based on the last four characters of the station's MAC address.
Configure your normal Wi-Fi
- On your phone or computer, connect to
RAK_XXXX. - Open a browser.
- Go to:
http://192.168.230.1- Select your normal home/office Wi-Fi network.
- Enter its password.
- Choose Connect.
- Once the station joins your network, the temporary
RAK_XXXXhotspot disappears. That is normal.
RAK's current quick-start documentation says WPA3-only networks are not supported. Use WPA2 or WPA/WPA2 mixed mode if the station will not join your wireless network.
YOU DO NOT NEED THE COMMAND LINE FOR BASIC SETUP.
For normal Meshtastic configuration, you can go straight to the web interface in the next step. SSH is mainly for advanced Linux administration.
If you do use SSH, the stock RAKPiOS credentials are:
rakchangemeRAK says the system prompts you to change the default password on first login. Do that immediately.
When connected directly to the temporary setup hotspot, the SSH address is 192.168.230.1. Once the station is on Ethernet or your Wi-Fi, use the IP address assigned by your router.
OPEN THE MESHTASTIC WEB INTERFACE.
In your browser, enter:
https://YOUR-STATION-IP:9443Example:
https://192.168.1.123:9443If you're still connected directly to the temporary RAK setup hotspot, use:
https://192.168.230.1:9443At this point the Raspberry Pi, RAK6421 HAT, radio, and meshtasticd are communicating well enough for the web interface to come up.
SET THE CORRECT MESHTASTIC REGION.
Inside the Meshtastic Web UI, set the LoRa region for the country where the station is physically operating.
Select the U.S. Meshtastic region. If you're deploying somewhere else, choose that location's legal region instead.
Do not copy a random region setting from a YouTube video. Region settings affect legal frequency and radio behavior.
TEST BEFORE YOU ADD ALL THE FANCY STUFF.
- Confirm the Meshtastic Web UI stays connected.
- Confirm the correct region is set.
- Look for nearby Meshtastic nodes.
- Send a simple test message.
- Verify another node receives it.
- Send a reply back to the WisMesh Station.
Do not start troubleshooting MQTT, Grafana, Node-RED, GPS, sensors, or remote dashboards until ordinary Meshtastic messages work both directions.
THEN EXPLORE THE GATEWAY FEATURES.
The HP version can transmit up to 1 watt. More power does not fix a bad antenna location, poor line of sight, bad coax, or incorrect network settings. Use appropriate radio settings and local regulations.
ONLY REFLASH IT IF YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO.
RAK's stock image is based on RAKPiOS with meshtasticd pre-installed. If you intentionally replace it with standard Raspberry Pi OS, you lose the ready-to-run advantage and must install/configure meshtasticd yourself.
RAK's current guide says the following must be added to /boot/firmware/config.txt so the Raspberry Pi can recognize the RAK6421 HAT+ EEPROM:
dtparam=i2c_vc=on
dtoverlay=i2c0Then reboot. This is an advanced/recovery path — not part of the normal out-of-box setup.
BEGINNER TROUBLESHOOTING.
I don't see RAK_XXXX Wi-Fi
The RAK hotspot password isn't working
rakwireless. On Windows, make sure you're entering a security key/password rather than a WPS PIN.The station won't join my Wi-Fi
I can't open the Meshtastic page
9443: https://IP-ADDRESS:9443. If you're on the direct setup hotspot, try https://192.168.230.1:9443.I can open the web UI but can't hear any nodes
Should I reflash the SD card?
